After the Deluge/ Before the Flood/ Rebuild/ Replace/ Repeat
Cathedral Art Projects, Heather Moore Community Gallery Jacksonville FL
Fall 2018
Living in Florida has made me more accutely aware of the threat of damaging storms and hurricanes. Even when not a direct threat, these storms, which appear to be growing in frequency and intensity based on recent hurricane seasons, cause considerable damage to those living in storm prone areas. Often assigned a dollar value in terms of damage, one question that arises in a place like Florida is: how can we protect ourselves from future storms, and a what point is it not worth it to simply rebuild? This piece was designed as a scaffolding/ shelving unit, built from the debris of our former community, for us to put our valuables on higher ground in order to attempt to protect them from the next seemingly inevitable threat. This piece was completed over three days with assistance of students from the University of North Florida.
UNF Student Volunteers included: Nikki Aquirre, Timmy Caudill, Drew Carlee, Charlie Cartwright, Don Curcio, KeShauna Davie, Charla Donatelli, Deja Echols, Connor Poovey, Ricder Ricardo, Lizzy Scott, Jenna Sparrow, Mimi Tran, Miles Taylor, Z Toth, and Kirsten Williams.

Paper Making Workshop
Following the exhibition, I collaborated with Cathedral Arts Projects to bring a recycled paper making workshop to one of their after school arts programs. I worked with CAP teaching artist Mariah Cagle’s class of 25 elementary school students who produced about 80 sheets of paper recycled from scraps of the exhibition in about 45 minutes.
