Things I'm Not Allowed to Draw is an ongoing participatory drawing experiment. Participants are asked to draw something they were told they shouldn't draw. In exchange for their submission they are gifted a print of a skull- something I was told that I shouldn't draw. The survey is ongoing with various iterations including installations with drawing stations.
In science emergence examines a kind of intelligence that exists outside the individual- one that extends from the collective behaviors of a group. This project starts with a simple, even silly question, asked of an individual: what is something you are not allowed to draw? But through our collective participation this question can help us reconsider our relationship to the creative process. As this library of drawings grows it becomes a site to reckon with kitsch and taboo images, with self reflection and external expectations. The act of making and sharing drawings can help us reckon with creativity not only as individuals, but as a community.
There are currently 50 submissions.
