Paper City
The COVID 19 pandemic found me expanding my creative practice to create opportunities for others. It began in 2020 with an exchange portfolio I developed called "Routine Maintenance" and then a broadsheet newspaper titled "Multitasker". I took this energy and realized an opportunity to develop a creative research project to launch a small press operation at UNF. In Fall 2021 I wrote and was awarded a grant to purchase a Risograph duplicator with the idea that it would become a site to explore collaborative publishing initiatives with partners at UNF, in Jacksonville, and beyond.
In 2022 I joined the Center for Community Based Learning (CCBL) at UNF as part of CCBL Cohort 14, a group of faculty who are interested in developing community based learning as part of their classes. My project is centered around developing a class called "Zines and Community" where students would learn to work with community partners to help develop materials to share their stories and promote their work, with the goal of creating a transformative experience where students and community members can learn from each others experiences and talents. The class hopes to deepen student interest in community practice while providing a framework for how to thoughtfully engage with local leaders and groups.
Originally called "Amplifier!" the name of this project grew to "Paper City" to reflect the idea that with simple means of paper, ink, and storytelling, we can make an impact on ourselves and our community. This page shares hosts of the community based work that I've done over the past few years.
